SUMMARY:Zoom Viewing Party & Discussion on Confronting Anti-Indigenous Raci
 sm & Colonialism in California
DESCRIPTION:During our Zoom Viewing Party\, we will screen a recorded prese
ntation from the Director of the California Indian Culture and Sovereignty
Center\, and Cal State University San Marcos Chair of American Indian Stu
dies\, Dr. Joely Proudfit\, Ph.D. She\, along with several Native American
activists\, will be teaching the actual history of California Indian Peop
les (often hidden and omitted from the national narratives)\, and making v
isible what anti-Indigenous racism & colonialism look and sound like. We w
ill also be offered solutions: ways to combat anti-Indigenous racism by re
cognizing ways to shift away from settler colonial mindset and behavior.\n
\nIt’s a critical part of breaking with colonial conditioning to listen
to Indigenous voices speaking from American Indian perspectives...\n\nNo o
ne else has the lived experience or cultural knowledge to credibly speak f
rom a position of knowing about Tribal realities\, heritage\, and culture.
When any person who is not from a Tribal community presumes to have the a
uthority\, credibility or entitlement to teach others about a Tribal ident
ity which they do not hold\, it perpetuates colonialism's subjugation and
erasure of Natives. The transformative shift is for settler colonial folks
to understand the importance of learning about American Indians from Amer
ican Indians and not from an outside source.\n\nOur hostess for this event
is Sam Beltram\, who is both an Indigenous Person and a member of the Pal
omar Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. We welcome you to this experience
of listening to the insights and knowledge shared by the First Peoples of
the Land. Come join this conversational journey!\n\nRegister here: HERE (a
fter registering\, you will receive an email with additional information).
