DESCRIPTION:UUFSD is honored to host the monks of Gaden Shartse Norling Mon
astery\, South India\, during the week of May 16-20\, for a Sacred Sand Ma
ndala Creation. This ancient two dimensional Tibetan Buddhist mandala is t
he most artistic\, labor-intensive and concentration-intensive of all mand
alas created. For a full list of events\, visit uufsd.org/sandmandala.\nVi
ewing the Sand Mandala Construction\nThis ancient two dimensional Tibetan
Buddhist mandala is the most artistic\, labor-intensive and concentration-
intensive of all Mandalas created. It will require between 75 and 125 hour
s of effort\, completed by several monks at a time.\n\nThe public is welco
med daily to view the Sand Mandala\, visit with the monks and shop in thei
r Tibetan Buddhist Market. Chairs will be set up near the mandala table fo
r those who wish to stay awhile\, or meditate\, as the monks work mindfull
y to create the mandala. The peaceful sounds of the mandala tools\, softly
rubbing harmoniously against each other\, can help one feel more relaxed\
, centered and connected to the universe.\nAbout Sand Mandalas\n\n\nMandal
a means literally "that which extracts the essence." There are many differ
ent types of mandalas used by Tibetan Buddhists. They can be created in e
ither two or three dimensions. The ones on the monks' tour are two dimensi
onal sand mandalas. These are without doubt the most creative\, labor-inte
nsive\, and concentration-intensive of all mandalas created. The ones prov
ided on the tour will require between 75 and 125 hours of effort\, complet
ed by several monks at a time.\n\nEach sand mandala represents the archite
ctural layout of the entire palace of a specific deity. The Manjushri mand
ala\, symbolizes the embodiment of prajñā (transcendent wisdom). There a
re multi-layered symbolic images throughout the “palace\,” where icono
graphy\, placement\, and color all have significance.\n\nIn the past\, san
d mandalas were made with the powdered results of the grinding of precious
stones\, such as turquoise\, lapis lazuli\, coral\, powdered gold and sil
ver\, and many other cherished and priceless materials. Today\, this is on
ly done on very special and/or auspicious occasions. More commonly\, the c
olors are made of powdered and dyed stone\, sand\, dust\, flowers\, and ch
arcoal. The colors are chosen to match the color of one of the Buddhas of
the five Buddha families. The sand is applied very precisely by the gentle
tapping of a sand-filled metal cone that has had its tip removed. The out
line of the mandala is defined by the holding of a string that is dipped i
n chalk and then 'snapped' in the appropriate place.\n\nUpon completion of
the mandala\, the monks will purposely destroy the magnificent work of ar
 t. The Buddha's last words were "All things are impermanent\, work out you
r salvation with diligence." In upholding the principle that life is trans
ient\, the monks sweep up the mandala and place the sand in a river\, lake
\, or ocean as an offering to purify the surrounding environment.
