Following the October 2023 attacks, the scale and nature of the Israeli military’s response in Gaza has drawn intense international scrutiny and allegations of genocide and ethnic cleansing.
Mass displacement: The Israeli military has ordered the mass evacuation of Palestinians, displacing an estimated 90% of Gaza’s population—about 1.9 million people, many repeatedly. Human Rights Watch states this is “widespread, systematic, and intentional” and a crime against humanity.
Intentional destruction: Reports from the UN and human rights groups detail the widespread destruction of civilian infrastructure, including homes, schools, hospitals, and agricultural land. This destruction renders Gaza uninhabitable and makes the return of displaced Palestinians impossible.
Siege and starvation: Israel’s “total siege” of Gaza has cut off supplies of food, water, fuel, and medical aid. Human Rights Watch has accused Israel of using starvation as a weapon of war.
International legal challenges: South Africa has filed a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), accusing it of violating the Genocide Convention. In an interim ruling, the ICJ ordered Israel to take measures to prevent genocide, but multiple reports indicate non-compliance. The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry has also concluded that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza.
