The Yellow House (2019) by Sarah M. Broom, Memoir and National Book Award Winner for Nonfiction,
will be the book we discuss on Monday, September 11th at 6:30pm at UUFSD.
In 1961, Sarah M. Broom’s mother Ivory Mae bought a shotgun house in the then-promising neighborhood of New Orleans East, home to a major NASA plant where the postwar “Space Race” optimism was high. Fifty years later the Yellow House was wiped off the map after Hurricane Katrina. This memoir expands the map of New Orleans to include the stories of its lesser-known natives, and demonstrates how clan, pride, and familial love resist and defy erasure.
