Monday Evening Book Club Visits Hawai’i

Kawai Strong Washburn’s debut novel, Sharks in the Time of Saviors uses the Hawaiian idea of aumakua, a protector who returns in animal form to save their family, to show us the rich and varied culture of the Big Island of Hawai’i. A boy saved by sharks seems to have puzzling new abilities, which cause his family to question their legacy and find the meaning of heritage.
